Croissant

A bit of history

Croissant is believed to have originated from kipfrel; an Austrian pastry popular in the 13th century. Nowadays, it is a popular pastry, commonly served alongside coffee for preakfast, in different parts of the world. It can be sold without filling as in France and Spain, but can also having fillings including chocolate, jam etc and toppings as seen in Italy and the United States.

Variants and appellations

There are different variants of croissant. These are called differently depending on one's location
• In Portugal and Uruguay, their variant is referred to as meldialunas
• In Italy, it is called cornetto
• In Poznań - capital city of Poland - It is referred to as rogale świętomarcińskie; a pastry eaten on St. Martin's day.
